How do I compare weekly and monthly rent correctly?
Use the actual billing basis and contract duration. Weekly rent multiplied by 52 and divided by 12 gives an average monthly equivalent, but it does not replace the contract’s payment schedule. Add bills and transport consistently. A lower weekly rate over a longer contract can produce a higher total rent bill.
Read the answer →Should a refundable housing deposit be counted as a cost?
Track it as cash required and money temporarily unavailable, rather than automatically treating it as final expenditure. Record the return conditions and timing, with a scenario for disputes or deductions. Avoid adding the same deposit to the budget twice. You still need accessible funds to pay it when the contract requires.
Read the answer →Is a cheaper room farther from campus always better value?
Compare the saving after transport costs and the practical effect on your routine. Test the door-to-door journey during typical teaching and evening hours. Consider whether the commute would prevent participation in useful campus activities. A low rent can be poor value when travel costs and time make the planned student life impractical.
